magnolia moon

eight migrations later

I'm home

Another haiku that opens with a strong image. I can see how the plate-sized blossom of a magnolia might remind us of the full moon in all its pearly glory. Magnolias grow in many places and are among the oldest trees going back 95 million years. Perhaps ‘magnolia’ is alluding to other myths or meanings, but to me, it suggests a full moon that makes this homecoming special. It also reminds us that through eight migrations, one repeatedly goes through the moon’s phases. The moon is our constant companion. Note, too, the alliteration of ‘magnolia/moon/migrations’ and how lovely it is to read this haiku aloud. ‘Magnolia moon’ offers a sense of celebration to this lovely homecoming.

relocation  -
a refugee
in my own land

Right away I felt the music of the English language in this haiku. The alliteration of ‘relocation/refugee’, the assonance within ‘relocation’ and ‘own’, all things that delight the mouth and the ear when read aloud. And it has the one thing I love most about haiku – understatement. We can’t know the reasons for the relocation, whether anticipated or forced, nor can we know the reason the person feels like a refugee, but we can certainly enter this haiku on an emotional level. Have they moved to a place where they don’t fit in? Is it time-related, such as returning home and feeling like a refugee because the world has gone on without them? Or like true refugees, are they facing various levels of persecution due to race, religion, and other forms of persecution? I, too, have felt like ‘a refugee in my own land’ on occasion.

through the looking glass matisse's blue

This poem by Katherine is jam-packed with allusion, ekphrasis and references. Pretty amazing for a 6-word monoku. First there is an allusion to Lewis Carroll’s book Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. It is the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alice again enters a fantasy world but this time through a mirror that reverses everything, including logic. This is like the room in Miró’s “Harlequin’s Carnival.” There things are illogical as well. I think Alice would be right at home in it. In addition to this allusion there is a reference to ‘matisse’s blue.’ It is well known that Matisse loved blue. Not the pale, baby blue of a background but a loud, punch-in-the-face kind of blue. The “Harlequin’s Carnival” has a window painted in a Matisse-like blue. There is also more of the blue inside the room. In Matisse’s painting, “The Blue Window,” he connects the outside with the inside. But Miró uses it more as a place of calmness for the eye to rest when the activity in the room becomes overwhelming. Thank you, Katherine!
